Individuals who express the desire for work in the private sector may enter into Supported Employment. Once in SE, an individual receives assistance from an SE counselor in locating and securing employment with a private, for profit employer. An early and extremely important component of placing individuals in the private sector is a determination not only of their skills but their interest. During lengthy interview sessions, counselors take into consideration each client’s entire work background, their successes in different work areas and their disability. The counselors then match a client with a suitable work situation. When necessary, training includes instructions on the use of public transportation.
The most critical time is the first few weeks as clients adjust to the requirements of their new position. During this time counselors will be in close contact with the client and will work directly with them on the job. Individuals also receive intense personal supports beyond placement which includes ongoing follow along services both on the job and off.
Adults with disabilities bring an outstanding work ethic to the job along with an above average tenure which employers appreciate. The positions in which these adults succeed are fairly diverse and include: gardener, grounds keeper, games attendant, photo lab worker, stock worker and food handler. In some cases a counselor may help create a new position by suggesting a division of responsibility that makes sense to the employer and matches both the skills level and interest of a client.
The O.T.C. also offers Employment Training. Individuals are brought directly into this program. This particular training set differs from vocational training in that it is intended for individuals who possess the skills to work in the private sector but have difficulty retaining jobs. Individuals in this program are given training specifically designed to strengthen their work skills and more importantly their work habits. The O.T.C. recycling division offers an excellent employment training program.
Placement services are available for referred clients whose needs would best be served in private, for profit employment. In these instances, clients bypass vocational training at the O.T.C. and counselors help place them with local employers while the clients continue to enjoy all the benefits of supported employment. |
