Research and
Demonstration Greenhouse
The Burlington County Research and Demonstration
Greenhouse is a joint venture between the Burlington County
Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey Eco-Complex.
The
46,000 square foot greenhouse is located at the County Resource Recovery
Complex in Columbus. The location enables researchers at the greenhouse to
use methane gas, which is naturally released from the landfill, as an
alternative energy source for heat and electricity.
An automated
production system that utilizes supplemental lighting and hydroponics
allows for consistent, year-round tomato crop production.
Trainees
from the O.T.C. who receive job training at the greenhouse participate in
the day to day operations. These duties include planting, transplanting,
pruning, harvesting and packing the tomato crops. A transportable bench
system decreases worker fatigue.
