Celebrating NDEAM

Spotlighting the Importance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) which spotlights the importance of employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. NDEAM helps to celebrate the massive benefits and contributions that workers with disabilities bring to the world.

Started in 1942 as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week,” NDEAM has helped provide a greater understanding of how individuals with disabilities can help in the workforce. By sharing stories from the employees and those who work with them, we can help educate others on a topic that discussions about the workforce often ignore.

One goal of NDEAM is to help provide awareness for workers with disabilities. Compared to others, these individuals often times not paid adequately for their work. In some cases, workers with disabilities are paid well under the minimum wage, which makes it challenging to support their basic needs.

At the OTC, we employ many employees with disabilities in various jobs, such as bench assembly, which sees employees working on preparing consumer products for retail through packaging, product assembly, and digital weighing. In addition, there is also work in janitorial and recycling positions. With the support of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), these individuals can get access to careers that not only help develop essential skills but integrate into society. Make sure to stay tuned throughout the month of October for spotlights on some of the amazing employees with disabilities that work with us.
